Science and Engineering Week at the University of Leicester

Science and Engineering Week at the University of Leicester

Become a Boffin for a Day

The University of Leicester is offering people a chance to become scientists for a day.

As part of Science and Engineering Week, a Science Activity Day is planned for Saturday 8 March from 10am-4pm.

A range of exciting, interactive activities for people interested in the sciences will be available on this day. Visitors can find out how to make ice-cream the Chemist’s way, or how to solve a mystery using DNA! There will be activities, demonstrations and talks from the departments of Biochemistry, Cell Physiology, Chemistry, Genetics, Mathematics, Geology, Engineering and Computer Science.

In association with Microsoft, there will be a fascinating hands-on display of robots and robotic systems. Find out about the FIRST LEGO League, an exciting and fun global robotics programme aimed at promoting discovery, science and technology.

Come and hear presentations by Dr Mike Branney; Dr Mark Williams and Professor David Siveter from the University’s Department of Geology, on the themes of Explosive Volcanic Eruptions; Fieldwork in the Antarctic and Climate Change; and Exceptionally Preserved Fossils. There will also be an opportunity to talk to geologists and handle geological materials.

Watch an enzyme at work using a spectrophotometric assay.

There will be more interactive activities in GENIE, where you can find out about ‘freaky flies’ and what can go wrong, as well as discover more about DNA fingerprinting and genetic diversity.

Explore the "Physiology of Man" where you can learn how your heart, lungs and muscles work through a series of hands-on experiments.

Registration will take place in the Percy Gee (Students’ Union) building from 10am.

The event is free and open to all.
