Sculpture at De Montfort Hall revealed

New centrepiece to hall's grounds by Leicester honorary graduate

Issued on 17 August 2010

A new sculpture celebrating classical music at Leicester's De Montfort Hall, created by the curator of the University of Leicester’s summer exhibition, Heart, Head & Hands, has recently been unveiled.

Dr John Sydney Carter’s work entitled ‘Concerto’, is inspired by instruments from the orchestra, and was donated to the city by a Leicester resident, who commissioned the work in memory of Lois Birch, a life-long supporter of the hall's classical music programme.

The sculpture, taking pride of place in the front gardens of the hall, was unveiled by BBC Radio Leicester's John Florance before concert-goers and members of the public immediately before a Philharmonia Orchestra concert.

Dr John Sydney Carter is an Honorary Graduate of the University of Leicester and a Leicestershire-based artist and Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors.

‘Concerto’ was commissioned with the help and support of the Friends of New Walk.

Leicester City Council's cabinet member for culture and leisure, Councillor Rob Wann, said: "This is a lovely gesture to celebrate the lifelong pleasure that the hall and its classical music programme have given to its visitors.

"I'm delighted that the sculpture will take pride of place at the hall."
