1994 Group welcomes HEPI report showing the strengths of the UK's research base

Issued on 25 March 2010

Welcoming the report Paul Marshall, Executive Director of the 1994 Group of leading research-intensive universities said:

“University research is vital to the UK’s capacity to meet current and future national and global challenges and to drive economic growth. This HEPI report highlights the breath of world-class research at the UK’s research-intensive universities represented by the 1994 Group and Russell Group. Their world-class, innovative research underpins our prosperity and improves our quality of life.”

“We support HEPI’s conclusion that there is no general case for explicitly funding research according to historical institutional characteristics. Research excellence should be supported by funding the very best research ideas wherever they are found. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) showed that in 17 major subject areas 1994 Group universities are the UK leaders achieving 1st place in their field.”

“It would be wrong to artificially concentrate funding on a very small number of institutions but we must also be carefully not to spread resources so thinly that we risk damaging our world-class research areas within our research-intensive universities. The current levels of concentration, where about 90% of research funding goes to 38 universities, is enabling the UK to deliver truly world-leading research with high impact.”

“The dual support system of research funding which allows universities the autonomy to invest in new and emerging areas and curiosity-driven research is also an important factor in our international success and should be strongly supported.”
