He has been education editor at the Independent, home editor, deputy editor and editor at the Independent on Sunday, and books editor and editor at the New Statesman, for whom he continues to be a columnist. Press comment: “I was born in Leicester and spent the first 18 years of my life there, and still follow with obsessive interest the fortunes of its sports teams. I was the first member of my family to attend a university and it gives me enormous pleasure to be awarded an honorary degree by my local university. It would give my parents, now sadly dead, even more pleasure.”
