Leicester-born journalist and education columnist, currently writing for the New Statesman and the Guardian

He became a research assistant, working on books concerning the misgovernment of Britain and on Kim Philby. In 1968 he joined the Observer as a reporter, becoming education correspondent in 1972 a post he subsequently held at the New Statesman and at the Sunday Times.

He has been education editor at the Independent, home editor, deputy editor and editor at the Independent on Sunday, and books editor and editor at the New Statesman, for whom he continues to be a columnist. He has also been a columnist for the TES and currently writes for the Guardian, on various subjects, particularly the media.

Peter Wilby is the author of Parents’ Rights (1983), Sunday Times Good University Guide (1984), Sunday Times Good Careers Guide (1985), Anthony Eden (2006). He has edited (with Henry Pluckrose) The Condition of English Schooling (1981) and Education 2000 (1982).

He is founder member of the editorial board of the Journal of Education Policy, contributes to numerous reviews and journals and a book entitled A Socialist History of Cricket is in the pipeline.

Press comment: “I was born in Leicester and spent the first 18 years of my life there, and still follow with obsessive interest the fortunes of its sports teams. I was the first member of my family to attend a university and it gives me enormous pleasure to be awarded an honorary degree by my local university. It would give my parents, now sadly dead, even more pleasure.”
