Summary of interview item: Describes helping to billet evacuees in Ibstock, Leicestershire, as a member of the Women's Voluntary Service (WVS) during the Second World War. Recalls first evacuees arriving on 1st September, 1939. Discusses the highly emotional process of evacuation and billeting. Describes the boys she took in herself, two from Perry Bar, Birmingham who stayed until they were 14 years old, followed by two brothers from London, who she has remained in contact with. Recalls the brief billeting of a mother with two small children from Birmingham, who was so distraught she only stayed for two days. Describes the preparations for the evacuee mother and the antics of the two boys from Birmingham. Discusses bed wetting but had no experience of this. Recalls the evacuees from Birmingham coming by train to Bosworth then bus to Ibstock.
