Summary of interview item: Theatre. Compilation of interview extracts recalling the theatres, amateur theatre and theatre people in Leicester from the 1940s. John Graham recalls the start of his interest in theatre at university and subsequent experience as a member of the Leicester Drama Society, including the fire which nearly destroyed the Little Theatre. He also recalls the professional theatres in Leicester from the mid 1940s and local people connected with theatre production such as the set designer George Coleman. Lesley Gillot recalls joining the Leicester Drama Society and describes various members and how the society came to use the building in Dover Street, formerly the Rechabite's Hall, as their premises. He also recalls the fire. Zelda Rubenstein recalls how she became interested in theatre and her work at the Theatre Royal in Leicester. She describes the interior of the Theatre Royal and the different types of production put on in the different theatres in Leicester. Actors and other people involved with the theatre are also recalled.
