Summary of interview item: Housing the People. Compilation of extracts from interviews with people talking about being rehoused in new council housing in Leicester from the 1920s. Building work on the new Saffron Lane housing is described, including the facilities, furniture and decoration. The experience of people moving in is recalled. The new housing on the Braunstone estate is also recalled, along with comments on the lack of transport and facilities. The rents of the new housing are described and the difficulties they caused for some people. The conditions left behind in the old slum areas are also detailed.
