Natural Heroes

Speaker: Gamble, David James, 1949 - 0, Interviewee, Male, Electrician
Speaker: Hyde, C., Interviewer, Male

Summary of interview item: This interview focuses upon a keen bird watcher with a passion for natural history. Starts with a brief description of how he became interested in bird watching locally after meeting with other watchers including Rod Cox and Rod Baker. Mention's a number of local sites such as Bradgate Park, Swithland Reservoir, Priory Water near Kirby Bellars and Newton Harcourt. Notes that he spotted a rare Pallid Harrier and dragonflies at Priory Water. Comments that Jeanne Ironside encouraged him to join Leicestershire and Rutland Ornithological Society (LROS) but that he prefers to generally watch alone. Felt disappointed that LROS did not help him as much as he had hoped with his survey of house martins. Felt he did much to make Priory Water popular with others and mentions an unpublished book on the first ten-years of watching there. He also edited Leicestershire and Rutland Bird Report (LRBR) and recieved an award from Leicestershire Wildfowlers Association (LWA). He then details his methods of categorising and describing birds. Mentions his concerns for birds including corn buntings, yellow wagtails and turtle doves. However, buzzards and other birds of prey are on the increase. Redstarts and whinchats were not breeding locally. He has recently been conducting common bird surveys and LROS surveys for the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO).
