Natural Heroes

Speaker: Ball, Harry, 1931 - 0, Interviewee, Male, Hosiery
Speaker: Hyde, C, Interviewer, Male

Summary of interview item: Natural history enthusiast. Interest sparked by visit to Malaysia in 1948 as a member of the armed forces, in which he spotted flying foxes, tigers, snakes and moths. Spent his youth and twenties more interested in football, both playing and coaching to a high standard. Started recording bird habitats with Peter Jones, before encouraging others in the 1970s. Occasionally went on trips with Loughborough naturalists, but preferred working alone, although attended Leicestershire Entomological Society (LES) lectures. Describes how he worked towards gaining permission to survey wildlife on private land belonging to the British Shoe Corporation (BSC), Severn Trent Water (STW), Parkers Farms sites, Stapleford Park, and Lord Churchill's land at Enderby. Other sites of personal interest include Wanlip gravel pits, Huncote embankment, surrounding Thornton reservoir and South Kilworth railway line. Suggests his interest in the works at Ketton may have led to the Leicester and Rutland Wildlife Trust (LRWT) to adopt and maintain the site. Outlines his interest in trapping, breeding and collecting moths. His records were kept at home and copies given to the LRWT, English Nature (EN) and Leicestershire Museums (LM).
