Ralf Schmid
RS is a bioinformatician coming from a biophysical chemistry background. His main interest is in protein structure/function/interaction and he attempts to address biological questions related to this from a joint evolutionary and biophysics perspective. When time allows he works on structure prediction and molecular modelling projects, a few small MD projects and large scale bioinformatics and phylogenetics analyses of protein families (see publications for recent examples). He enjoys programming, even though his java is a bit rusty and his python not as far developed as he anticipated a year ago. Nevertheless he manages to practise his Perl and PHP skills from time to time on trace2dbest, PartiGene or annot8r and hopes to finish the dbestmine project in the near future. Apart from this he is trying to keep up with science and bioinformatics research in general, and in particular the research going on in his group. He is (almost) always happy to give bioinformatics advice (if in his fields of expertise) and to explore scope for new collaborations.
Imtiaz M. Shafiq  Imtiaz is a lecturer in biochemistry at the University of Punjab, Lahore, and has joined the group in early 2007 on a grant from HEC Pakistan. His PhD project focuses on homology modelling, ligand docking and structure based drug design for specific CDK4 inhibitors (in collaboration with Paul Jenkins from Chemistry). He is now an expert in comparative modelling (MODELLER) and ligand docking (DOCK and GOLD). Imtiaz is also interested in the evolution of CDK and CDK-like kinases.
Abbas Alameer  Abbas is a PhD student funded by the University of Kuwait who has joined us (and Mark Carr's group) in late 2007. He works on the mysteries of protein-protein complexes. Abbas is trying to make use of RDC and other NMR data as well as restraints derived from evolutionary considerations in an attempt to improve in silico protein-protein docking. Also he is rapidly gaining expertise in HADDOCK and he has recently developed an appetite for Molecular Dynamics simulations.
your name here  At the moment we have no funded PhD or postdoc positions available. However, if you are interested in working with us and have - or may be able to acquire - your own funding, feel free to get in touch to discuss potential projects.
