The history of Harborough

A large borough to the south of the county Harborough encompasses both Market Harborough and Lutterworth. The Market Harborough On Line site features an excellent introduction to the origins and history of Market Harborough as a "medieval new town". More about Market Harborough's history can be found on Leicestershire Past and Present and on the Bigfern guide to Market Harborough. The history of the Market Harborough Workhouse is also available on the web at Peter Higgenbotham's website.

More recent history of the town can be found at impressively detailed Market Harborough in the First World War site. Around 200 oral history interviews about the area are held by Harborough Museum. These interviews will hopefully be brought into the East Midlands Oral History Archive before the end of the project.

Family historians should make sure that they are in contact with the Market Harborough Group of the Leicestershire and Rutland Family History Society. The GENUKI's Market Harborough parish page offers another starting point for family historians with interests in the area.
