Freeschool Lane glass bottle

Image of 3d laser scanned model of Roman glass bottle from Freeschool Lane excavationsULAS has been working in partnership with Leicester City Council and De Montfort University on a project to display many of the finds from excavations in Leicester on a website. Although the scheme, funded by Renaissance East Midlands, is still in its early stages, it should ultimately be possible to search for objects of the Roman and medieval period by type, and display an image and catalogue details on screen.

As an experiment, one particular find, a complete Roman glass flask (which perhaps once contained perfumes or oil) has been subject to high-tech scanning by the School of Architecture De Montfort University. This involved three-dimensional laser scanning of the artefact. Read more about this work here (pdf file).
