Gavin Speed BA MA
Senior Supervisor
Gavin is a senior supervisor, working for University of Leicester Archaeological Services. He studied for his two degrees (B.A Archaeology, European Union; M.A Archaeology and Heritage Management) at the University of Leicester. He has excavated on a wide range archaeological sites both in the UK and abroad, gaining skills in site-surveying, fieldwalking, desk-based archaeological assessments, and building surveys.
Gavin has been working for ULAS since 2001, and has been involved with many rural and urban projects. Some of the larger projects include supervising at Highcross Street, Leicester (part of the Highcross excavations), and directing rural projects such as Iron Age settlements at Birstall and Cadeby, both in Leicestershire. He has been involved in various School research projects – most recently the Wallingford Burh to Borough Research Project.
His main research interests are in late Roman – early Saxon urban transformations, for which he is currently undertaking part-time PhD research, he recently edited conference proceedings from ‘Debating Urbanism’ – this is now published and available here.
