Angela Monckton

Consultant - Environmental Archaeology

Angela obtained her BSc in Botany at the University of Leeds. She also holds a Leicester University Extra Mural Advanced Certificate in Archaeology, is a Member of the Institute of Field Archaeologists and the Association of Environmental Archaeologists.

Prior to joining ULAS she worked for the Leicestershire Archaeological Unit. Angela worked on a variety of excavations from 1985, and in various roles including supervisor and site environmentalist. From 1989 she specialised in the environmental aspects of archaeological excavation and was Environmental Supervisor on a number of sites including the major urban excavations at the Shires and Causeway Lane, Leicester.

Angela worked as Environmental Officer for ULAS from 1997 where she co-ordinated the sampling and processing strategies for sites as well as producing specialist reports for ULAS and other archaeological units. She also works towards the publication of the environmental data and co-ordinates reports from external environmental specialists, as well as contributing reports on her own specialisms. Angela has published reports in Transactions of the Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society, contributed to the volume on Causeway Lane, and has a number of published reports and Centre for Archaeology Reports on Midland sites. She was an English Heritage contractor during 1996-7 at Birmingham University. Currently, since 2010, Angela is acting as Environmental Archaeology Consultant for ULAS, advising on sampling, writing reports mainly on the analysis of charred plant remains for various contractors, and editing reports for publication. Her research interests are in the archaeology of food and farming in Leicestershire and the Midlands with particular reference to urban Leicester. Recent publications include a chapter in The Archaeology of the East Midlands, chapters in various ULAS publications (Score 2011, Thomas 2011), and work in progress includes contributions to the analysis and publication of the Excavations at the Highcross Leicester.
