The Oadby Student Village

Set in wonderful parkland, adjacent to the Botanical Gardens and University Sports Facilities, the Oadby Student Village is one of the most impressive student accommodation sites in the UK. Including John Foster Hall, Beaumont Hall, Digby Hall and Gilbert Murray Stamford Hall, there is an excellent social programme with music, dance and drama lessons.

The village is a mixture of properties, from wonderful Edwardian houses to our newest purpose-built blocks. These four halls are very popular with undergraduates, especially those just beginning their university career. Higher levels of pastoral care are provided to reflect the younger population.

The Surrounding Area

The Halls of Residence are situated in the leafy suburb of Oadby, close to a large supermarket and plenty of pubs and restaurants. The area is approximately 3.5 km south of the main University campus and is served by a regular bus service into the city and the university campus. This is complemented by the Students' Union minibus service at night.

Living in Halls

Choosing to live at one of our Halls of Residence allows you to make the best possible start to your time here. The majority of places in Halls are catered, meaning you can leave most of the domestic arrangements to us and concentrate on getting to know other students and the university. Catered blocks provide 14 meals per week in a dining hall - breakfast and evening meal Monday to Friday, brunch and evening meal at weekends - so that you won't have to worry about cooking or washing up. Residence contracts begin from evening meal on the Sunday before the start of each term, until breakfast on the Saturday at the end of each term. Each block or house has a small kitchen area for making hot drinks and snacks.

Approximately one quarter of the rooms in Oadby Student Village are self-catered. These blocks and houses have more extensive kitchen facilities to enable the preparation of meals. All properties are designated either catered or self-catered and it will not be possible to change to live on a self-catered basis in a catered property, or vice versa.

All Halls are mixed gender, however some individual blocks or corridors are male or female only. All rooms have Internet and telephone connection.

Taking an active part in the social life of a Hall of Residence is a great way to make new friends and find out what life as a student is about. There will be organised events, including formal meals and entertainment, and there are lots of opportunities to get involved in sports and leisure activities.

Active Junior Common Rooms (JCRs)

In each Hall of Residence the JCR is the hub of social life. Here you will find organised entertainment, trips, activities, balls and formal dinners, concerts and sporting events - providing you with the opportunity to get involved in a variety of activities.

Vacation in Halls

The catered residences are used extensively during Christmas, Easter and summer vacations to accommodate conferences. We will normally keep one property open at Christmas and Easter for those residents on catered contracts who wish to stay during these vacations. All catered rooms must be vacated and cleared of all personal belongings during the vacations. The Social facilties in the Halls are not available to residents on 39 week self-catered contracts during the Christmas and Easter vacations. Income from commercial bookings is used for improvements and to subsidise fees. Further details, including how to book vacation accommodation, can be found here.
