SARAH BARLOW - Senior Occupational Health Advisor:

My name is Sarah Barlow. I am the Occupational Health Advisor for the University of Leicester. I have been the OH Advisor at the University since May 2005.

I completed my Registered General Nurse training at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading in 1987. I returned to Nottingham and discovered Occupational Health. I worked freelance for various companies such as Boots Plc, Rolls Royce and Thorntons Chocolates before settling at East Midlands Airport for 5 years.

I decided to concentrate purely on Occupational Health, so I studied at Nottingham Trent University for 2 years, and gained my diploma in Occupational Health. Whilst completing my diploma, I had contracts at Pedigree Petfoods, Whatton Prison and Pork Farms.

Once qualified, I worked at Leicester Royal Infirmary as the nurse looking after the commercial contracts. My clients included a bakery, a college, and several heavy industry manufacturers.

I then worked for 4 years at Carlton Television in Nottingham. I also covered the studios in Birmingham twice a week. My role included assisting television productions with risk assessments, accident investigation, medical advice, nursing cover for stunts and looking after staff and stars!! While at Carlton I gained my Nebosh Certificate, a Health and Safety qualification. My duties included both occupational health and health and safety issues.

My other occupational experience includes a plaster board manufacturer and Leicester City Council.

I have been with the University of Leicester since May 2005.

My duties include:

• Health Surveillance - including radiation medicals and lung function testing
• Hepatitis B immunization for staff working with human tissue infection control, vaccinations and immunity checks.
• Monitoring of immunisation status
• Health advice and information
• Health promotion
• Health advice following sickness absence
• Assistance with returning to work following an absence
• Pre-employment health assessments (when required)
• Counselling for work related injuries, accidents, illness and impairment
• Ergonomic and workplace design issues
• Alcohol & drug abuse issues
• Employee health e.g pre-and post natal, post-accident or illness, & follow up.
• Professional liaison with external parties e.g HSE

CLAIR BAILEY - Clinical Administrator:

My name is Clair Bailey, and I am the Occupational Health Clinical Administrator. I have been at the University for nearly 4 years, and I have 12 years experience working within medical administration at Bupa in Leicester. My hours are 09.30 - 14.30.

My role at the university includes:

• Providing the first point of contact for Personnel Officers, Doctors, and 3.500 staff
• Receiving visitors to our department
• Handling calls requiring medical information and those that can be dealt with personally
• Setting up and maintaining medical record systems for new, existing and former employees
• Inputting and extracting client information from the appointment Recall system
• Liaising with Departments regarding appointments and cancellations
• Sending out appointment letters
• Extracting and arranging client medical records in order of Nurse and Physician appointments, on a daily basis
• Undertaking general office duties encompassing photocopying, faxing letters and memos, opening and segregating mail for the Nurse and Doctor
• Ensuring through diary management, all correspondence from employer referrals are completed and disseminated within given deadlines
• Maintaining confidential, accurate and up to date recording and filing systems
• Organising welcome packs for new members of staff
