It will briefly cover the University regulations and procedures concerning "Notification of intent to submit", "Appointment of Examiners" and "Submission". It will also deal with the processes of writing and producing the thesis and offer advice on style, layout, diagrams, etc. |

Location: Henry Wellcome, Frank & Katherine M ay LT Session leaders: Dr C Jones, Biobator Abstract: Universities are involved in fundamental and applied research in a range of disciplines, generating numerous innovative ideas that may have significant commercial applications. These ideas may prove to be important assets of both the universities in which they were developed, and the individual staff who work on them. Income generated by such ventures can be a useful source of funds for new research. The objectives of the session are to provide a practical introduction to the subject of Intellectual Property (IP), and increase researchers’ familiarity with the processes involved in commercialising research. This session is aimed at raising awareness of IP and how it can be utilised to transfer knowledge and research outputs out to the benefit of business and the community and to potentially generate a financial return through its commercial development. |

Location: DWL 1st floor SR Session leaders: Dr Kevin Byron Abstract: Apart from an in-depth knowledge of the subject under study, conducting research effectively in any field also requires a combination of creative and critical thinking skills and where appropriate, the ability to separate them. This workshop will aim to explore the nature of creative thinking and the factors that both nurture and inhibit it. Some 'tools' for nurturing creative thinking in research will be explored and a framework will be described in which the various tools for critical thinking and creativity can be applied in a systematic way. |

It will also discuss the reviewing and editorial processes that a manuscript goes through when submitted for publication to a scientific journal. |

There will be five main prizes together with five highly commended awards. In addition to the master prize and three subject category prizes, we will also be presenting a Peer Recommendation Prize.
