Leading Your Research Team
A common theme that emerged from both the Research Leaders' Survey and the PI focus groups was that PIs would welcome guidance on leading and developing their research teams. Key issues that emerged included:
- The problems of maintaining and enabling the ongoing development of research teams, particularly given the uncertain nature of research funding.
- The complex nature of research teams and the need for PIs to simultaneously juggle leadership with other related roles such as mentor and supervisor.
- Managing the team to achieve the research aims on target
- Managing the conflicting and competing needs of different team members for their own career development, particularly research outputs.
Three modules have been developed which start to address these issues. They do this by exploring some of the classic leadership and management theories and relating them explicitly to the leadership of research teams.
Modules which have been developed so far address:
- Leadership
- Team development and team roles
