Legal and Ethical Issues
PIs identified a number of legal and ethical issues that they would welcome further guidance on. These included:
- The Fixed-term working directive
- The EU Charter & Research Concordat
- Recruitment
- Selection
- Health and Safety
- Patent and IPR
- Publication and Authorship Issues
The PIs acknowledged that their institutions already provided training and development opportunities addressing many of these issues, but that these were often generic. These resources provide guidance and support materials tailored to specific issues and questions posed by PIs. Three modules have been developed to date. These address the issues of (i) recruitment, (ii) selection and (iii) the EU Charter and Research Concordat. They draw upon the experiences of real PIs, research staff and personnel officers to provide a comprehensive view of the issues. In the near future, we hope to develop modules addressing other legal and ethical issues of concern to PIs.
