The City of Leicester

Leicester is a clean, historic, multi-cultural city set in traditional English countryside. It was the first 'Environmental City' in Britain.

The Night Life

When choosing a university this may be very important to you. Leicester has a very large range of pubs, clubs and bars some of which stay open till 5am (for those of you with the stamina).

The Halls

Some of the catered halls of residence are situated near the Botanical Gardens and all of them have grassy areas where it's ideal to sunbathe in the summer. Asda is a short walk away from the catered halls and there is a free bus every week from the self-catering halls to and from Asda, to make it easier to do your weekly shop. The University is on the no. 80 bus route from halls, with bus stops outside or opposite each hall. If you are feeling energetic it's about a 40 minute walk each way from Oadby, or 20 minutes from Elms Road, or just 10 from Putney Road. The 80 also goes into the town centre. As a student you can get an annual or termly bus pass that will save you lots of money if you plan to use the bus every day. The pass allows you to travel on any bus so you can also use it to get into town. See the accommodation section for more details.

here are essentially three basic types of accomodation to choose from: catered halls, self-catered halls and private housing. Each of these has its pros and cons.

To find out about any of the forms of accomodation, click one of the links below.

The Town Centre

You will find all the usual high street shops as well as more interesting ones hidden down little side streets. There is a nice big shopping centre, The Shires, that is open late on a Wednesday. The clock tower in the centre is a good landmark for meeting people under. Leicester market is open every day except Sunday, you can even shop at the Lineker family stall. The outdoor market sells fruit & veg, flowers, clothes, electical goods, bags and other stuff. The indoor market has a clothes section upstairs and cheese, meat and fish downstairs.

The Park

The University is next to Victoria Park. This is where many sporting activities take place. During the summer the park is full of students enjoying the sunshine.

Other websites to visit

For all the information you could need about the city and its environment, sport and entertainment you can't do better than visit the University's City Guide . It is packed with information including links to the local sports teams, and entertainment links like 'The Ultimate Gig Guide'.

The University has a visual tour you can take of the university and the city. Visit The Visual Tour page to see what Leicester looks like.

The National Space Centre

The National Space Centre is situated at near Abbey Park, and there is a bus that goes there from the city centre. It offers some good opportunities for part-time work during term time and full-time employment during the vacations, apart from providing welcome cash, working here can enhance your CV.

The Rocket Tower

In the rocket tower there are the upperstages of two rockets and on the top floor is the satellite zoo, a collection of scale models and real size satellites. In the Space Centre there is also the Space Theatre, which has the ability to project films on a domed planetarium ceiling. It's impressive. The rest of the space centre is filled with displays, artifacts from spacecraft and fun interactive exhibits.

There are often a number of Leicester physics students working here during the summer. As summer jobs go it's a great place to work.
