The post holder will have a research interest in UK politics, particularly on political parties and/or elections, and strong quantitative research methods skills. Ideally, applicants’ research interests will also include comparative politics and/or the politics of the EU or at least one other EU member state. The successful candidate will join a team of researchers working on UK/EU comparative politics with a focus on parties and elections. Currently, a Leverhulme Trust-funded project in the Department on party competition on the centre-right in Britain examines the dynamics of party competition between the Conservatives and UKIP, and the role played by parties in altering the salience of European integration. Other research focuses on political parties across Europe, both east and west. The post therefore offers excellent opportunities for research collaboration and for developing independent research in a supportive and stimulating environment.
The Department of Politics and International Relations is a well-established research and teaching unit within the College of Social Science. Its objective is to develop further an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching, fostering a close synergy between the two. The Department currently comprises two Professors, five Senior Lecturers and six Lecturers. Staff undertake research in fields as diverse as British politics, the European Union (EU), US and African politics, human rights, intelligence, security, and migration. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise two-thirds of the Department’s research activity was classed as internationally significant. The Department has performed consistently well in the National Student Survey and in the 2009 survey was ranked first in the country for overall satisfaction.
