To the Leading Researchers of Tomorrow

The Times Higher Education has applauded Leicester’s very different approach, declaring the University "elite without being elitist."

We have a strong claim to be elite. Placed in the top 3% of universities globally by world rankings, the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise saw the University make major gains. Research funding rose 27%. The National Student Survey sees Leicester continue to excel. The Sunday Times declared Leicester "top... amongst mainstream multi-faculty universities for student satisfaction." Earlier this month the Times Higher Education named the University of Leicester as winner of the award for ‘Outstanding Student Support’.

The University is home to both Britain’s top rated research department (Museum Studies: RAE 2008) and Britain’s top rated teaching department (Cell Physiology and Pharmacology: NSS 2008).

We’re proud to be elite. But we are at least as proud, if not more so, of not "being elitist." Our inclusive and accessible culture is our hallmark. Indeed, of Britain’s top twenty universities only one - Leicester - meets its government benchmarks for inclusivity for students from state schools and lower socio-economic groups.

As we build on these strengths, I am delighted to announce a further investment in six major areas of academic development through our New Blood lectureship scheme. In this advertisement, I invite interest from well-qualified candidates with high quality research records across the following areas:

Those joining us through this initiative will be guaranteed reduced teaching loads, study leave and start-up funding as part of an appointment package. The appointments will be made on the Lecturer grade 8 scale (from £35,469 to £43,622 and exceptionally to £49,096).

If you are one of tomorrow’s leading researchers we would be delighted to hear from you. For further details of the positions please follow the links above. The closing date for applications is Thursday 26th November.

Yours sincerely,

Robert Burgess
Vice-Chancellor
