We are offering music scholarships in the form of free tuition on any instrument, or voice; these are available to first year undergraduates and postgraduates new to Leicester from any department beginning courses in September 2011. Successful students will be expected to attend ensemble or choral rehearsals and to take part in concerts. The scholarships normally run for three years and are further enhanced through the University's partnership with the Philharmonia Orchestra which provides opportunities for masterclasses and conducting tuition.
Music flourishes at the University in the form of orchestras and choirs, as well as a concert band and big band which are run by student committees in conjunction with Embrace Arts at the RA centre. Recent works that have been performed include Elgar's Pomp & Circumstance March No. 4, Handel's Messiah, Finzi's Interra Pax, and Beethoven's Symphony No 7. Student societies also combined to present an evening entitled 'Music from around the world'.
Scholarships are tenable for one year in the first instance, but would usually be extended for a further two, given a satisfactory report and a willingness on the student's part to continue. It is expected that the majority of scholarships will be used to encourage instrumentalists from any tradition including singers, jazz or band musicians to have lessons and take a practical role in student music in the University. Opportunities for recitals and chamber music will also be offered to scholarship students wherever possible.
The University Music Scholarships are intended to support and enhance the practical standard of music-making in the University. It is envisaged that the majority of instrumental or vocal scholarships will be spent on lessons with professional teachers.
We are grateful for the support of University of Leicester Alumni who have continued their support for music scholarships in 2010/2011 which enhances the provision available to students.
The scholarships are intended for any student who is serious about music and its wider promotion, in any genre. Any classical, jazz or ethnic instruments will be considered, as will voice. Applicants will be considered in the context of whether they will contribute to music-making as a whole in the University.
Decisions will not be made on performance standard alone (successful applicants tend to be around Grade 7-8) and the following will be taken into account.
Students should demonstrate
Candidates are asked to submit an application form and a written account (max. 250 words) entitled 'How my abilities, experience and initiative will contribute to the musical life of the University of Leicester'. Please note that the new deadline date for receipt of applications is Friday 30th September 2011. It would be helpful if candidates registered their interest in the Music Scholarships upon acceptance of their conditional offers. There will be a shortlist of twenty.
Auditions will normally last about 20 minutes. Ten minutes of music should be prepared. You should choose something that shows the best of your technical ability, but also include something you can play or sing easily which gives you the chance to demonstrate your musicality and ability to communicate. If you can't think of one piece that shows both these characteristics, feel free to present extracts from two pieces. For instrumentalists, perhaps one piece could be unaccompanied, though an accompanist is provided should you require one. In addition, we shall provide a short piece of sight-reading.
Auditions will be held on Saturday 8 October 2011. If you are interested, please write to Eleanor Graff-Baker, Music Manager, Embrace Arts at the RA centre, Richard Attenborough centre, University of Leicester, PO Box 138, Leicester LE1 7HA or telephone 0116 252 2455, email arts-music@le.ac.uk
