My research combines interests in publishing and museum studies. With case studies at the Wellcome Institute’s new public exhibition space and a national art museum, I am investigating the production and reception of print media related to exhibitions. I am interested in how the supporting books and catalogues published by museums are produced by curatorial and research staff and by freelance individuals. In conjunction with this, I am investigating how the printed resources are used by visitors to the exhibitions. One aspect linking the production and reception is the text and images so I am also analyzing how they are presented in the books and how they related to the exhibition experience.
I hold a fractional post (0.5) as Senior Lecturer at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies at Oxford Brookes University, I teach undergraduates and postgraduates aspects of the contemporary publishing industry such as typographic design, layout and computer technology.
I attended the recent (February, 2007) NaMu conference in Norrköping, Sweden on National Museums.
I have worked in museums in the United States and in Botswana as well as the UK in the areas of education and communication. In Botswana I set up the publishing unit at the National Museum in Gaborone.
My masters, completed in 2005 and from this department, involved a survey of publishing by UK regional and local museums which identified the issues facing institutions wanting to produce print media to support their communication processes.
