The Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow (GoMA) opened in 1996 and quickly established itself as a member of the city’s family of museums (now part of Culture & Sport Glasgow). Its exhibition policy has a range of elements but the central distinguishing feature is the ‘Contemporary arts and human rights’ programme which began in 2001. The National Gallery has commissioned the Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG) to evaluate Articulate 2, their secondary school literacy programme. Since 2003 the National Gallery has been working with professional authors, poets, scriptwriters, and journalists to develop literacy work with secondary schools from the London boroughs of Hackney, Islington and Brent. The model has enabled students, teachers, gallery staff and the writers involved to gain new perspectives on how the visual arts can be used to inspire creative, thinking, learning and writing. During 2008 and 2009, RCMG will explore the impact of the programme on the students from multiple perspectives, including that of the teachers, gallery staff and writers, and place it in a broader national context of learning in museums.
Their Past Your Future, was launched in 2004 as part of the Veterans Reunited programme to bring generations of people in the UK together to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Their Past Your Future 2, run by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and funded by Big Lottery, is the second phase building on the success of first programme. It is an annual grant programme of £1.5 million open to all museums, libraries and archives in England. The Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG) has been commissioned to evaluate the programme focused on projects taking place in 2007-2010. The evaluation will also use data collected in year 1 to reflect on the programme and give context to this study.
