Information for students
Societies
At present there are five music societies run by students and supported by Embrace Arts at the RA centre: the Choral Society, the Leicester University Chamber Choir, the Orchestral Society, Concert Band, and the Big Band. They are all well-established and welcome members of staff and the general public. They offer opportunities for students to serve on their committees. You will find further details through links in the Choirs, Orchestras & Bands section.
Freshers' fair
Freshers' Fair takes place on the first Monday and Tuesday of the autumn term. If you are seriously wishing to continue singing or playing - or even to join a choir for the first time - you should make yourself known at the appropriate Music Society's stall (normally situated in the Queen's Hall).
Where to practice
The University Main Campus has three practice rooms, each with a piano:
- The Attenborough Building has two on the ground floor - as you enter through the glass doors, they are just the other side of the door in the far left-hand corner. They are open from 8am to 6pm Mondays to Fridays. No key is required. The Attenborough Building can be accessed via a swipe card after 6pm and at weekends. Please call at Embrace Arts at the RA centre on Lancaster Road for an application form.
- The Charles Wilson Building has one music rehearsal room on the 10th floor which is used for music society rehearsals and teaching. Please telephone 0116 252 2455 or email akb17@le.ac.uk to book this room.
- There are also music practice rooms at No.2 (Room No. E003) and No.6 University Road (Room No. G001). Both contain pianos. These rooms can be booked at times when teaching is not timetabled to take place. Access is by keypad code. To make a booking contact the Timetabling Office on 0116 252 5248 or roombookings@le.ac.uk who will issue the code.
- Some Halls of Residence also have a practice room.
