FAQs

What modules / courses are available?

All our Modules and Courses are at Masters level. The Masters degree programme is designed to be as flexible as possible and consists of stand-alone modules and short courses, as well as the full Masters programme (Masters in Clinical Sciences). Individual modules are awarded at 15 Masters-level academic credits. There is no requirement to sign-up for, or indeed complete a Masters degree. This system is designed so that you can progress at your own pace and to your own desired level of education. If you intend to complete the full Masters, you have a maximum of six years to do so.

How are the modules funded and will I have to pay?

The modules form part of the Learning Beyond Registration contract with the East Midlands Healthcare Workforce Deanery, and are fully funded for non-medical healthcare professionals in this region. You should discuss your personal and professional educational requirements with your manager and seek their approval in order to be eligible for funding.

What qualifications will I need to register?

You should have a registerable professional healthcare qualification such as a degree or diploma, with at least three years clinical experience.

How will the course help me with my personal and professional development?

The program is designed to be as flexible as possible, allowing learners to progress at a comfortable pace and to stop at postgraduate certificate or diploma level if desired. There is no requirement to sign up for, or indeed complete, a Masters degree. However, learners working to level 7 (Masters level) are expected to demonstrate a mastery of complex and specialised areas of knowledge and skills. This includes an expertise in highly specialised and advanced technical, professional and research skills.

How many study days will there be?

This depends on the individual module that you are studying. You can find out by looking at our list of Modules and Courses, or by contacting Lynn Barker.

How will I learn and who will teach me?

Modules are designed to encourage active learning. You will be assisted in your learning by a core academic team, with experienced clinicians and other professionals. We will present material in talks and demonstrations; you will then work to apply it to simulated and real clinical scenarios. Much of your studying is self-directed; you will seek out information to supplement that presented directly to you, learning through group learning as well as from your tutors.

How will I be assessed?

Modules are assessed in a variety of different ways, depending upon the module being studied and can include Short Answer Papers, Observed Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) and Reflective Portfolios.

How long will it take me to complete my studies?

In general modules are run over five consecutive days or half a day a week for 12 weeks. The timetable will be able to provide you with more details regarding each course. Modules and Courses

Are the courses accredited?

All of the Modules and Courses are accredited by the University of Leicester. Some modules, such as Teaching for Learning have an optional accredited award; this means that the taught component of the module is available, but the assessment that is required for award is optional.

How will I know that I am ready to study at Masters level?

We suggest you discuss this with your line manager.

How will I be supported through my studies?

The Professional Development Unit offers resources previously only available to medical students. For example, learners in some modules will use the dissection room under the supervision of expert clinical staff. All learners will be able to access the full educational facilities provided by the Medical School and University. Link to student resource site
