Thank you for visiting the Web Site of the Leicester Literary and Philosophical Society, a learned society which has been in existence since 1835. This year we celebrate our 175th birthday which will be marked by a special event after the AGM on April 26th. It will include the launch of Professor Patrick Boylan's book on the History of the Society and a soiree with special exhibits to harp accompaniment. The 'Lit and Phil' holds fortnightly sponsored talks, at 7:30pm followed by discussion, on alternate Mondays in the Main Gallery of the New Walk Museum during the winter and spring. They cover a broad range of topics in the arts, literature, natural history, philosophy, and the sciences.

Recent speakers have included Sir David Attenborough; Lord Attenborough; Lady Archer; Sir Neil Cossons, Former Chairman of English Heritage; Baron Oxburgh; Professor Richard Hoggart; P.D. James; the Astronaut Helen Sharman; Lars Tharp; Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Harry Kroto; Sir Ghillean Prance of the Eden Project and Kew; Professor Sir Christopher Frayling, the Rector of the Royal College of Art; and Sir Peter Williams, Treasurer of the Royal Society and Chancellor of the University of Leicester. .

Membership

As most of our lectures are sponsored membership is a modest £12.50 and £7.50 for each additional member of your household and is only £1 for students.
