Chat

The University of Leicester Library provided a Chat Enquiry Service from October 2000 to January 2001. This trial investigated the potential of this type of service for distance learning students based around the world. The results of the trial will be published shortly. Lou McGill, Distance Learning Services Librarian will be presenting a paper about the service at the Libraries Without Walls 4 - The Delivery of Library Services to Distant Users: Distributed Resources - Distributed Learning Conference in Lesvos, Greece in September 2001.

24/7 Reference Project

Service: "Each of the Demo Libraries will implement the Live Reference Service in their own manner. Most will limit use of the service to their own registered library users; some will use the system exclusively between units of their own system; others will use Live Ref in both ways. Each library will determine the type of access they wish to explore, the hours at which the service is available, etc. The service can be altered at an instant's notice depending on the individual library's needs.
Note: Stage One includes inserting a "ask me" icon on a selected page of their website--either a site available to the general public or an in-house library page. Because the ASK ME icon is controlled by the library--visible only when the service is "in action"--you may or may not see it when you visit the library's website. "

Software:
Based on Cisco's Webline product, but they have added several features of interest to libraries, such as e-mail transcripts of sessions.

Real Time Reference Using Chat Presented at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago on July 8th, 2000
"In the Spring 2000 semester, the Reference & Referral Center began a pilot project to provide real-time reference using Internet chat technology. This service allows the librarian and studentto remain in contact while the student acts upon the instructions and search strategies suggested by the librarian. This technique is especially useful for students with one telephone line and for the hearing impaired. Librarians from the Reference & Referral Center will describe the chat software selected, relate success stories and problems, and outline other potential uses of this technology. The process used to evaluate student satisfaction with this new service will also be addressed."
