A Sense of History

Every city has its cathedral and Leicester is no exception. Ours is located next to the medieval Guildhall on the west side of the city centre. Leicester's origins date back to Roman times and the Jewry Wall Museum traces this history. On New Walk, the eighteenth century walk way that connects the campus to the city centre, you will find the New Walk Museum and City Art Gallery.

Forget Jurassic Park, we’ve got the biggest dinosaur in Europe and it’s in The Leicestershire Museum and Art Gallery on New Walk. The colossus from Rutland has to be the City's oldest resident and is the highlight of a wonderfully varied collection which ranges from ancient Egyptian relics to German expressionist paintings. The museum also houses an important decorative arts collection and is host to a variety of special exhibitions like the recently acclaimed People’s Show.

Gas may be with us but steam is a technology of the past. Well you can now travel by steam power again on The Great Central Railway. Trains run regularly between the Leicester North and Loughborough, and you can dine in the restaurant car while you admire the Leicestershire countryside. You might even catch local boy, Sir Richard Attenborough, making his latest movie at one of the period-piece stations.

If your enthusiasm runs to vintage cars, try to get to The Leicester Mercury's Historic Transport Pageant at Abbey Park. It is held every year in May and is one of the Country's finest displays of classic vehicles from buses to bubble cars.

Leicester is undoubtedly a city with a sense of history, but we also find exhibition space for the best of the new. The City Gallery in Granby Street, for example, provides a showcase for contemporary painters, photographers, craftspeople and sculptors. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday and admission is free.
