A Sporting Chance

Leicester is famous for its sporting success. Seven of the World Cup winning England Rugby Squad are from Leicester including Martin Johnson. The Leicester Tigers stadium is a mile from the University campus. As is the Walker Stadium, the impressive home of Leicester City Football Club. Both venues host annual varsity matches. At Grace Road you can watch County Cricket at the home of Leicestershire.

W.G.Grace,Gary Lineker, David Gower, Peter Shilton, Dean Richards and the flying Underwood brothers - Leicester has been associated with some great sporting personalities, and the city offers tremendous opportunities to the sports fan.

You can see top class football at the Walker Stadium or witness the clash of rugby giants at Welford Road, home of Leicester's cup-winning Tigers. You might like a flutter on the horses at Leicester Racecourse and, in summer, Grace Road is the venue for County cricket action.

The city also boasts first class basketball and American football and staged the first World Cycling Championship to be held in England at the Saffron Lane Velodrome.

If you would rather participate than spectate then, again, there are plenty of opportunities.

Leicester has a dozen leisure centres, offering facilities for almost every kind of sporting activity with many of the centres have swimming pools. In addition to cycling, Saffron Lane has a fine all weather athletics track with flood lighting and spectator stands.

Golf enthusiasts will find excellent eighteen hole courses and extra practice facilities at Humberstone Heights and Western Park. Both courses are open to all with no membership required.

If you are looking for some family fun, you might spend an afternoon or evening at Leicester's Superbowl where the attractions include the interactive laser game, Quasar, and American pool, as well as ten-pin bowling.
