Wireless and Remote Printing Service

1 Introduction

The Wireless and Remote Printing (WARP) service allows print jobs to be submitted remotely to the charged print queues at the University. Jobs can be submitted from the Wireless Network Service or from a remote computer, ie. a computer not connected to the campus network.

Print jobs in the charged print queues remain available for release for 2 hours from the time of submission. For information about the charges and the location of printers see Printing Information and Where can I print my work?.

PLEASE NOTE: Any print jobs with errors due to the instructions on this page not being followed will not be refunded.

2 Accessing the WARP Service

The WARP service is based around the Internet Printing Protocol [External Link] (IPP) which is an extension of the HTTP protocol. This allows printers to be accessed in a secure manner and it also allows IT Services to control who has access to the WARP service. Because WARP uses interoperable standards computers running Windows XP/2000, MacOS and Linux should be able to access this service. MacOS and Linux users, however, should consult the manufacturer's documentation for instructions on how to use IPP printers. Instructions for Windows XP/2000 computers are provided below.

To access the WARP service you will require the following:

  • Administrator level access to the computer from which you wish to use the service
  • The printer drivers for the printers HP LaserJet 8150 Series, PCL 6 and HP LaserJet 8550 Series, PCL 5 (Depending on the system in use you must first install the necessary printer drivers and then add the print queues that you intend to use.)

3 Access from a Windows XP/2000 computer

Before you can use the Wireless and Remote Printing service from a Windows XP/2000 computer you must first install the two printer drivers that are required, see Installing the drivers. These drivers are supplied by Hewlett Packard. Whilst IT Services will attempt to assist you with any problems, support for any personal equipment is limited and is provided on a best efforts basis. IT Services will not be held responsible for any issues that may arise as a result of the driver installations.

NOTE: After installing the drivers it is necessary to add the print queues that you wish to use, eg. A4 or A4duplex.

3.1 Installing the drivers

The two printer drivers that must be installed on a Windows XP/2000 computer are available in a self-extracting zip file at https://warp.le.ac.uk/drivers.exe.

PLEASE NOTE:

  1. You must be logged on to the computer as an administrator in order to install the drivers.
  2. Some modification has been made to these drivers using HP supplied tools to ensure that the printers know that duplex printing is available.
  3. If you are using the Chinese language pack for Windows XP please refer to the Known Issues below.

To install the drivers click on the above link to ensure you are downloading the latest version of the drivers. You will be prompted to enter your CFS username and password. Next you will be asked if you want to 'save' or 'run' the file and you should select Run. After the file has downloaded you will see the following window:

[Install Drivers]

Select Run and the driver installer will extract itself to the TEMP location on your machine and then start the installation wizard program. Follow the wizard using the Next> buttons and click Finish when it completes.

Your computer now has the printer drivers installed and next you must add the single sided and/or the double sided print queues that you wish to use, see below.

3.2 Adding the single sided queues

There are three single sided queues available:

  • A4
  • ColourA4
  • ColourA3

Each queue has a unique address which is made up as https://warp.le.ac.uk/printers/QUEUENAME/.printer, and so the address for the A4 queue is https://warp.le.ac.uk/printers/a4/.printer . The method for adding each queue is the same regardless of the name of the printer, the address is the only thing that changes.

To add the A4 print queue initiate the 'Add a printer' wizard which can be found in Printers and Faxes on the 'Start' menu or in the 'Control Panel'. In the window that opens click on Next> to see the following:

[Add Printer Wizard1]

Select the option A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer and then click on Next>.

[Add Printer Wizard2]

In the next window select Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network and type https://warp.le.ac.uk/printers/a4/.printer into the 'URL:' box and then click on Next>.

[Add Printer Wizard3]

Next click on Use the specified user account and enter your CFS username and password. The option 'Use the same security settings for all users' should be left unchecked.

Click on OK and the A4 print queue will be added to your list of available print queues. This may take a few moments, depending on the computer that it is running on.

The Default Printer window opens next and you have the option to select this print queue as your default. Click on OK and when the installation is completed click on Finish

3.3 Adding the duplex queues

There are three duplex (double sided) queues available:

  • A4Duplex
  • ColourA4Duplex
  • ColourA3Duplex

To add a duplex print queue repeat the instructions provided above for adding a single sided print queue, substituting the queue name required, for example the address for the ColourA3Duplex queue is:

https://warp.le.ac.uk/printers/colourA3Duplex/.printer

Duplex queues require slightly more configuration than single sided queues because you must instruct the printer to print double sided. IT Services has done everything possible to make this an easy process. Proceed as follows:

When the 'Add a printer' wizard has completed you must right click on the icon of the new print queue you have just added and select Properties. In the windows that opens click on the Printing Preferences... button.

[Add Duplex1]

Check the box which says 'Print on Both Sides' and then enter a sensible name in the 'Print Task Quick Sets' box. Click on Save and then click OK twice.

[Add Duplex2]

The print queue has now been instructed to use duplex (double sided) printing.

PLEASE NOTE: You must do this for each duplex (double sided) print queue that you add. Otherwise, documents sent to a duplex queue will only print on one side of the paper but you will be charged as though it was a duplex job using both sides of the paper. For example, a 3 page document would print on 3 pages and would therefore cost the same as if you had printed a 6 page document.

4 Known issues

1. Installing the drivers

There is currently a known problem if you are using the Chinese language pack for Windows XP and you attempt to install the print drivers. Please contact the IT Service Desk for advice on how to proceed.
