The disciplines of history, ancient history and archaeology offer different but complementary ways of studying the past.

Our degree in Ancient History and History will teach students whose interests are primarily historical rather than archeological to explore the sources for both the classical world and for later periods. There are two core intellectual links:

First Year

Introduction to Greek History
Introduction to Roman History
Greek Language Tools
Latin Language Tools
People and Places
Monarchy and Society
Politics, Religion and Society in Early Modern Europe

Second Year

Public Life in Greece and Rome
EITHER two modules in the School of Historical Studies OR
one module in the School of Historical Studies plus Latin for
History & Ancient History 2
Social and Economic History of the Classical World
Sources and Methods in History and Ancient History
Other approved options in the School of Historical Studies

Third Year

Dissertation (10,000 words)
2 modules in both Ancient History and the School of Historical Studies
