Student on ParkThe BA History course at Leicester is designed to let you explore the past and to gain skills that will equip you for working in today's world.

The first year of the programme includes a number of core courses, or 'modules', which fulfil two purposes (see Course Structure). Firstly, they equip you with the skills necessary to thrive in an honours degree programme in History, upgrading your skills from A Level to Degree level work. Skills covered include referencing of books and articles for your coursework assignments, the use of computer catalogues, critical analysis, and training in oral presentation. Secondly, they provide a grounding in periods and approaches to the study of history - for example, the medieval world or social history - which may be relatively unknown to you. With this foundation you will be better able to choose from the extensive list of modules that make up a significant part of your second and third year studies.

Your second year provides you with lots of opportunities to choose what you want to study. You choose two modules in the first semester which encourage you to think about broad historical themes, across a number of case studies. We call these modules 'Ideas in History' (e.g. Gender; Ethnicity; Power; Class; Globalisation; Imperialism), and you choose two further options in the second semester. A group project and a module on Historical Research Methods deepen your historical skills.

You determine the shape of your third year pattern of work, so options feature prominently again. Specialization is the key feature of your third year studies, as well as working with primary sources. A dissertation - covering two of the six modules taken - written on a subject of your own choosing, allows you to work independently with primary materials, while the special subject - again two modules - focuses closely on the interpretation of a particular historical topic through the examination of a number of documentary sources chosen by the tutor for the course.
