MA in International Economic History

This MA is eligible for a taught-postgraduate studentship for 2007/8 (fee waiver).

Duration

MA ImageOne year full-time or two years part-time.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of a second class degree, normally in a field closely related to the areas studied.

Course Aims

The course aims to provide a thorough understanding of contemporary global issues in relation to the evolution of the world economy. Changes in the pattern of trade, imperial expansion, migration and investment, and the changing role of governments, international institutions, multinational corporations and banks are topics for particular attention.

The MA has been specifically designed to combine research training with the advanced study of economic and social history, and is an excellent pathway to a PhD thesis.

The MA has ESCR recognition as a Master’s course providing research training.

Taught courses are divided equally between research training (60 credit points) and seminars about the history of the international economy (60 credit points).

Dissertation

The last five months of the full-time course (eight months in the case of part-time students) are devoted to the preparation of the dissertation (60 credit points). Students are free to follow a related theme of their own choosing in this section of the course. However, it will have to be approved by the members of staff responsible for the organisation of the course.

Teaching and Assessment

Each of the course modules is taught on the basis of small groups. There are some lectures, but mostly there are seminars, workshops, and assignments. Students are assessed by a combination of essays, projects and a dissertation.
