BA History of Art
The BA History of Art course at Leicester is designed to let you explore the art and architecture of the past and to gain skills that will equip you for working in today's world.
The first year of the programme includes a number of core courses, or 'modules', which fulfil two purposes (see Course Structure). Firstly, they equip you with the skills necessary to thrive in an honours degree programme in History of Art, upgrading your skills from A Level to Degree level work. Skills covered include referencing of books and articles for your coursework assignments, the use of computer catalogues, critical analysis, and training in oral presentation. Secondly, they provide a grounding in periods and approaches to the study of History of Art - for example, 'Gothic' or 'Impressionism' - which may be relatively unknown to you. With this foundation you will be better able to choose from the extensive list of modules that make up a significant part of your second and third year studies. Alongside your art history components, you may also take an introduction to Film Studies (and you may choose second or third year options from the Film Studies degree programme alongside your art history modules if you wish). Alternatively, you may select modules from a wide variety of options such as Practical Art, American Studies, Archaeology, English, History, Italian, French, German or Spanish.
Your second year provides you with lots of opportunities to choose what you want to study. You take three modules in the first semester. One, Documents of the History of Art, provides you with an introduction to historical documents, across a number of case studies. You will also take a core option in European Art 1890-1940 and you select a further option. In the second semester you take a core option in Italian Art and Architecture 1400-1600, which includes a 5-week study trip to Rome, Siena and Florence.
You determine the shape of your third year pattern of work, so options feature prominently again. Specialization is the key feature of your third year studies, as well as working with primary sources. A dissertation, written on a subject of your own choosing, allows you to work independently with one-to-one supervision, while the special subjects focus closely on the interpretation of particular art-historical topics with leading specialists in the field.
