Introduction

SEIS-UK has a bewildering array of hardware and software to help with instrument configuration, installation, servicing, data extraction and data archiving. Precisely what a given project will require depends on the equipment borrowed, as well as the number of deployment teams and the nature of the deployment area. This page provides a brief summary of available equipment and its uses. A fuller idea of what will be needed for a given project can be gained by contacting SEIS-UK.

Palm computers

All SEIS-UK pda are palms, and these are primarily intended as tools for the field configuration and data flushing of Guralp instruments. This can be done using Guralp's software package "Shout". Most SEIS-UK projects would be provided with waterproof ruggedised Aceeca palms. Very large projects may also be provided with normal (non-waterproof) palms as backups in case of Aceeca failure.

Laptops and Desktop PCs

SEIS-UK has a large number of laptops which are shipped with the seismic equipment. Both standard laptops and Panasonic Toughbooks, which have limited weatherproofing, are available. The majority of both laptops are dual boot Windows/Linux machines, with some of the older machines being Linux or Windows only.

Laptops are provided to help with the pre-deployment setup of instruments, as well as the storage of field data. Communication with instrumentation in the field is normally with palms, or netbooks/Toughbooks for DCMs. A SEIS-UK Windows partition would normally have, in addition to the normal Windows programs, Guralps Scream software, GCFinfo software, Palm syncing software and various seismic documentation. A linux distribution will come with Scream, Passcal, PQLII and conversion tools.

Laptops for High Frequency systems

Two dedicated semi-ruggedised Ergo HardcasePro laptops are maintained for the HF systems. These run the highly specialised ISSI database and instrument control routines used with the SAQS. Both laptops have openSUSE Linux as an operating system and have been partitioned as per ISSI's instructions.

Peripherals

SEIS-UK has a variety of external devices including hard drives, disk readers, hubs, power adapters and connectors. Whilst a loan will include any hard drives directly used by instrumentation (SAMs, DCMs and 6TDs) it will not include large external hard drives for data archiving. These are usually purchased, in pairs, by the user. This allows two complete copies of a data set, one of which can be sent to SEIS-UK for conversion to miniSEED and archiving with IRIS.
