ACADEMIC
Degree (1984): B.Sc. Honours Geology; First class
(University of Nottingham).
Ph.D. (1988) Geochemistry
(Department of Geology,
University of Glasgow *)
"Stable isotope studies in the Caledonides of S.W.
Connemara, Ireland".
Post Doctoral Research Assistant (1988-1994) Isotope
Geosciences Unit, Scottish Universities Research and
Reactor Centre (SURRC) *,
Glasgow. With Dr A.E.
Fallick, studied stable isotopes in high temperature
geological processes and isotope exchange in water-rock
interaction.
Post Doctoral Research Fellow (1994-1997)
Department of Geology
& Geophysics, University
of Edinburgh *.
Funded by the
Royal Society of
Edinburgh/Scottish Office Education Department *. The
project: "Ages and temperatures in rocks: A multi-isotope
approach to resetting" was to develop a novel programme of
research into the resetting of ages and temperatures in
rocks, with the aims of
- understanding more fully the processes that control
resetting in different environments
- extracting useful information from reset data, such as
the rates, mechanisms and scales of geochemical transport
and timescales over which resetting processes operate.
Lecturer in Applied Geology (1997-present)
Department of Geology,
University of Leicester.
Research fields:
- Rifting, fluid flow and the generation of ore deposits.
- Isotope re-equilibration mechanisms in cooling rocks.
ANALYTICAL
- Over 11 years experience of oxygen, hydrogen and carbon
stable isotope analysis
- Currently developing a low-blank method for Rb-Sr
isotopic determinations (~50 pg Sr)
- Laser-probe Ar-Ar analysis
- Operation of Cameca ims4f ion microprobe for spatially resolved Rb and Sr
analysis
- Chemical and isotopic analysis of fluid inclusions
- Operation of electron microprobe, XRD, mineral
separation
COMPUTING
- Have written three large modelling
programs in FORTRAN-77, two involving a numerically
intensive finite difference algorithm
- Over 12 years UNIX experience, on a variety of
platforms (VAX 11/750, SUN, Silicon Graphics, IBM RS6000,
Meiko Computing Surface, Maspar MP-1)
- Have experimented with parallel optimisation of
modelling code
- Programming experience in S, awk, UNIX and BASIC
- Extensive experience of Apple Macintosh for word
processing, graphic design and database manipulation
- Was in charge of the computing facilities for the
Isotope Geology Unit
- Listowner of
geo-metamorphism
discussion group *
TEACHING
- At SURRC gave lectures and practicals on stable
isotopes as tracers of fluids to undergraduates in the
geology departments of the Scottish Universities
- In 1993 taught a major part of the "Fluids in the
Earth" course to final year students in Glasgow University
- Since 1997 have lectured and been module co-ordinator for courses in
Ore Mineralogy, Mineral Deposit Geology and Ore Genesis
for 2nd year Applied Geology undergraduates and Mineral Exploration MSc
Students.
