Daniel Smith’s PhD research is investigating the carbon flux dynamics of boreal forest fire scars. Field campaigns in 2006 and 2007 were based at Sharpsand Creek experimental burn site, Ontario, Canada. Here, Daniel took measurements of soil respiration, soil carbon storage and above ground biomass along a replicated fire scar chronosequence. SPLINT funded Campbell and Delta-T data loggers and sensors have been installed at the site to enable Daniel to record long term measurements of soil temperature, soil moisture and precipitation. These data will be used to model soil respiration at the field site over many months.
