Genetics is at the heart of modern biology and affects many areas of our health, welfare and daily lives.  The Leicester Institute of Genetics & Genome Sciences (LIGGS) aims to stimulate discussion, interaction and collaboration between scientists carrying out genetics research at the University of Leicester. We also champion new genomic approaches to basic and clinical research both within the College of Medicine and Biological Sciences research community here at Leicester and beyond.

At the nexus of this research institute is the Department of Genetics which has a formidable international reputation for its pioneering research. However, genetics research at Leicester extends far beyond the Department and there are a large number of scientists across the College that use genetic and genomic approaches in a broad range of biological and medical research. These applications of the basic principles of genetics and genomics are integral to the concept of this broadly-based research institute.

The Leicester Institute of Genetics & Genome Sciences promotes interactions and leads to the development of a network of these scientists. We are promoting a cross-pollination of ideas by inviting internationally-recognised scientists to our seminars , and organising day events and workshops. These events aim to mix established leaders in the field with younger researchers here in Leicester to give opportunities for interaction and, we hope, spark some new ideas. We also maintain a healthy link with GENIE in order to foster an integrated approach to genetic research and education: an excellent research base and an excellent teaching/training base inform and reflect on each other, ensuring Leicester is a vibrant location for postgraduate research training.

In summary, we will grow and maintain a well-funded internationally-excellent research caucus in genetics and genome sciences, by building on existing strengths here in Leicester. We aim to maintain our reputation as an exciting and invigorating research community.
