Genetics Education Training Videos
GENIE is developing a series of short educational videos covering common molecular biology laboratory techniques. Two videos have been produced so far covering pipetting and gel electrophoresis. The videos are aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students and can be viewed on DVD or as streaming media on Blackboard. The pipetting video won two awards at the 2007 HeSCA Meeting in Toronto.
The video, entitled “Using a Micropipette” which was a joint production between the Department of Genetics’ GENIE CETL and Audio Visual Services was the winner of a Gold Award and also the Holly Harrington-Lux Creative Design Award for best video.
“Using a Micropipette” and "Making and Running an Agarose Gel" are just the first in a series of training videos that will eventually number around five or six, and they are aimed at students aged 11 upwards.
A third video which provides basic information on genetis has also been produced and this is called "Genetics in Everyday Life". This video, while not providing technical information, does cover topics which range from, inheritance to genetic conditions. The video is aimed at students and members of the general public with little knowledge of genetics.
The VGEC site also contains other videos, not made by GENIE, but which are also very useful resources for teachers. All of these can be found under the "Resources" section for each subject.
