Alan Cocks was born in Ilfracombe, Devon in 1955. He received a BSc in Engineering from Leicester University in 1977 and a PhD from Cambridge University in 1981.
After completing his PhD studies he returned to Leicester to work as a Research Associate in the Department of Engineering. Between 1984 and 1986 he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, USA, where he had a joint appointment in the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and the Materials Research Laboratory. He returned to Leicester in 1986 to take up a Lectureship in Engineering. In 1990 he moved to Cambridge to become a Lecturer in Engineering and a Fellow at Downing College. At the beginning of 1996 he returned to Leicester, yet again, to take up a Chair in Mechanics of Materials. In 1995 he held a visiting position at the University of California in Santa Barbara.
His research interests include micromechanical and computational modelling of the deformation and failure processes of engineering materials, particularly at elevated temperatures, and the modelling of material processing procedures. He is an Associate Editor of the European Journal of Mechanics - A Solids. Personal interests include most sports (although now mostly from the armchair rather than on the field of play!).
