[Header tank
and Gravel Bed Flocculators] Header tank with Gravel Bed Flocculators.

[Sedimentation tank and
rapid gravity sand filter] Plain horizontal flow sedimentation tank followed by a small rapid gravity sand filter for tertiary treatment. Covers were erected over the sedimentation tank in an attempt to reduce solar heating effects which can lead to flow short-circuiting.

[Turbidity samples from
various stages of treatment] Turbidity samples following various stages of treatment. From left to right: raw water; post-flocculation; pre-filtration; filtered, treated water.

[Contact Flocculation Filtration experimental rig] Following preliminary laboratory studies on the use of Contact Flocculation Filtration and M.oleifera as a means of improving the treatment of low turbidity waters, field trials were carried out in Malawi using the experimental rig shown.
