The pictures below show the pilot plant that was designed, commissioned
and tested in Malawi by members of the Environmental Engineering Group.

Header tank with associated dosing apparatus.
Header tank with Gravel Bed Flocculators.
Plain horizontal flow sedimentation tank followed by a small rapid
gravity sand filter for tertiary treatment. Covers were erected over
the sedimentation tank in an attempt to reduce solar heating effects
which can lead to flow short-circuiting.

Turbidity samples following various stages of treatment. From left
to right: raw water; post-flocculation; pre-filtration; filtered,
treated water.
Following preliminary laboratory studies on the use of Contact Flocculation
Filtration and M.oleifera as a means of improving the treatment
of low turbidity waters, field trials were carried out in Malawi using the
experimental rig shown.
