Welcome to the English Association's new site dedicated to poetry and the teaching of poetry.
One of the central ideas behind the teaching of poetry lies in its ability to bring a fresh sense of life to language. It communicates through sound as well as sight and works its magic by tone as well as by engaging the eye with the pearl-bright moments of words moving along the currents of our changing times.
The How to Teach Poetry site has been developed with the encouragement of the Qualifications and Curriculum Decelopment Authority (QCDA) as an outcome of its English 21 exercise.
Most of the articles posted to date are by Ian Brinton, editor of The Use of English. We welcome contributions from teachers throughout the country to enable us to provide a bank of notes and ideas to support the teaching of poetry. |
