Fellowship Regulations

Categories of Fellows

The Fellows of the English Association shall be such Fellows, Honorary Fellows, Emeritus Fellows and Corresponding Fellows as may be elected in accordance with the Fellowship Regulations of the Association. The Association reserves the right to develop additional categories of Fellowship.

Eligibility

Those elected as Fellows must satisfy one of the following criteria

a) Distinguished service to the English Association

b) Distinguished service to English in one or more of the following fields

i) teaching

ii) research

iii) professional activity

iv) creativity

and must be residents of the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.
Fellows will be entitled to use the postnominal letters FEA. The total number of Fellowships will not exceed 500.

Honorary Fellows

The Association has the right to confer Honorary Fellowships. Honorary Fellows will be entitled to use the postnominal letters FEA.

Emeritus Fellows

Fellows, on retirement, may elect to become Emeritus Fellows. The Association also has the right to confer Emeritus Fellowships. Emeritus Fellows will be entitled to use the postnominal letters FEA.

Corresponding Fellows

Those who fulfil the criteria for Fellowship but who are not residents of the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands may be elected as Corresponding Fellows. Corresponding Fellows will be entitled to use the postnominal letters FEA.

Subscription

Fellows, Emeritus and Corresponding Fellows will pay an annual subscription, to be determined by the Board of Trustees. The annual subscription shall be due on the 1st January in each year. A fellowship will be deemed to have lapsed at the end of the year for which a subscription has not been renewed.


Publications Entitlement

Fellows, Honorary and Corresponding Fellows will receive copies of the Newsletter and of their choice of either English, Essays & Studies, The Use of English or English 4-11.

Emeritus Fellows will receive copies of the Newsletter and English.

Annual General Meeting

Fellows may attend the Annual General Meeting held each year at a time fixed by the Executive Committee.

Honorary, Emeritus and Corresponding Fellows may attend the Annual General Meeting but shall not be entitled to a vote thereat.

Fellows may also choose to meet from time to time to discuss the affairs of the Fellowship: such a meeting to be convened by the agreement of 20 Fellows.

Election to the Fellowship

Fellowships will be conferred by the Board of Trustees of the English Association on the recommendation of the Fellowship Committee. New Fellows will be welcomed to the Fellowship at the Annual General Meeting.

Fellows

Nominations for Fellowship may be made by Fellows and any member of the Association’s committees or sub-committees. A statement of support of 100-200 words from the proposer is required. Nominations of individuals within the same institution as the nominator will not be accepted. No individual may propose more than three Fellows in any one year. Applications for Fellowship may be accepted from eligible candidates with the support of two referees, one of whom must be a Fellow or a member of the Board of Trustees.

Honorary Fellows

Nominations for Honorary Fellowship may be made by Fellows and any member of the Association’s committees or sub-committees.

Emeritus Fellows

Nominations for Emeritus Fellowship may be made by Fellows and any member of the Association’s committees or sub-committees. Fellows, on retirement, may elect to become Emeritus Fellows.

Corresponding Fellows

Nominations for Corresponding Fellowship may be made by Fellows, Corresponding Fellows and any member of the Association’s committees or sub-committees. Applications for Corresponding Fellowship will be accepted from eligible candidates with the support of two referees, one of whom must be a Fellow or a member of the Board of Trustees.
