As the English Association
celebrates its centenary this is a good moment to take stock of the
present state of English studies in Higher Education and to consider the
future. Over the past century the English Association and English
studies, like the English language itself, have had an impact in
countries and communities outside England, and something of that
geographical variety is represented by our speakers.
'English' and English Literature
have also developed many different methodologies and engaged with a
variety of concerns and other disciplines:
-
Politics
-
History
-
Natural History
-
the Body
In the midst of this variousness,
does 'English' still have a coherent identity and an imaginable future in
the academy, or will it transform itself into a range of separate
disciplines and activities?
Has 'English' been helped or harmed
by recent developments and pressures within Higher Education?
Cost for the day (includes lunch and
refreshments) £60 (members) £75 (non-members)
£40 (students - limited places
available)
