Collection history

The majority of the recordings in this collection were made between 1984 and 1985, many as part of the 'In Service' project on Domestic Service and the 'Hidden Harborough' project, both conducted by the Museum. Additional interviews were recorded between 1986 and 1987.

What the collection contains

The interviews in this collection cover details about life in Market Harborough from the Hidden Harborough project, which include recollections on the Quakers Yard, Kings Head Place and work in the Co-op before 1940. Other interviews look at the theme of domestic service and provide an extensive insight into the below stairs world at such places as Thornby Hall and Kensington Palace, as well as more ordinary households.
