Welcome

Hello and welcome to the University of Leicester Slang Dictionary! This online dictionary was processed during an English Slang course in March 2009 at The University of Leicester conducted by Julie Coleman.

It offers users an insight and understanding into the slang used by students at Leicester University. I have researched and gathered information from both males and females ages between 20 and 22 offering a diverse and wide range of about 100 slang terms not specific to a region or influenced by their background. Using students is a great advantage as they vary in religion, class, region allowing this dictionary to be open and understood by other students.

In this dictionary you will not only learn slang used by students studying at Leicester University but also:

This glossary is designed to give you a brief insight into the slang used by university students. I am aware that slang is a constant changing fluid language, thus there will be spelling alterations and slight differences in meaning to what others may understand. The incentive for providing and recording this information is to emphasise the importance of language in society and to provide evidence of its changing nature.

This site is friendly for student and adults interested in the language used by Leicester University students.

I hope you find this glossary easy to use and enjoy browsing the terms collected.

Acknowledgements: I would like to thank all the participants for letting me use their terms and citations. I would also like to thank Dr Julie Coleman for support during the course and Alex Moseley for help on constructing this site.

Warning!!

Beware! To get a genuine insight into the language of students some of the words collected may be offensive to users. Words may cause offence in its unpleasant nature such as swearing, and terms relating explicitly to sex, genitalia and alcohol. I apologise for any offence this may cause you and advise young children and people who are of a sensitive nature not to use this site. Thank you and sorry for any inconvenience caused.
