Search Help

The link below contains abbreviations that are designed to help you understand what part of speech the slang terms are from when looking at the definitions.

abbreviations

Search terms in any box can be entered as whole words or phrases (eg. chav ; dog and bone) or as partial words/phrases (eg. ch ; dog) - the latter will also find any other words beginning with ch or containing dog.

You can enter a search term in one, or in several boxes: stick to simple search terms in one box to begin with, and then use more search boxes as you become familiar with the database entries.

In the dictionary you will find the following information:

    Headword - The word itself

Definition - What the word actually means

Useage - How it is used, when it was first used

Etymology - History of the word

Citation - An example of how it used

Pronunciation - How the word is pronounced

Grammatical Information - What part of speech the word is from (see abbreviations above)

Keywords - Subject of the word

All of the above words have search boxes, so for example if you are looking for a Geordie slang term used for a compliment, you can type 'compliment' into the keyword search box.
