The School’s profile is marked by a growing synergy between its teaching/training functions and research activities. Externally funded projects that will contribute to the 2008 RAE return include studies of innovative educational provision for at-risk students, the needs of second language learners in multi-ethnic settings, the use of ICT in schools, the mentoring of students in initial training and for Newly Qualified Teachers, and a systematic literature review exploring the contributions of support staff to pupils’ social and academic engagement. All of these projects involve teachers and/or students in local schools.
In addition to these, many School of Education staff are involved in research beyond the locality and in overseas countries, including Hong Kong, Lebanon, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico and Japan. Academic links also exist with universities in the many countries, including, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, Greece, Holland, New Zealand, Russia, and the USA. Several School of Education staff have been or are visiting lecturers or visiting Professors at overseas universities, in such countries including Japan, the USA and Malta. The School of Education participates in an academic staff exchange programme under the auspices of the Erasmus funding initiative with the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta.
